Midwest Ski Trip(or how we survived Snowriver)

We had a dedicated(or perhaps foolish) group of 20 Sitzmarkers embark on our annual UP ski weekend. We all managed to get there safely on Thursday after enduring some nasty blowing snow and brutally cold weather. During the drive we found out that all the ski areas were going to be closed on Friday. That was a first for skiing in the UP.

On Thursday night several of our group went to the bar in the lodge for a spirited game of LCR and of course a few well deserved cocktails. Others decided to just hangout in their condos and of course enjoy a few adult beverages.

Friday dawned with brutally cold weather(-25 with -45 windchills!) and all ski hills closed. Several of us decided to visit a local bowling alley, 5 of us attempted to bowl, with Keith showing us all how it’s done. Several others joined us to provide encouragement(or laugh at us) and of course to enjoy a few cocktails. Some of the younger members of our group(the Gredell clan) attempted to go for a hike but once they realized that the snow was too deep, they found a local bar to warm up in. I think I see a trend here!

Saturday was not as windy so fortunately the local ski hills were open. About half the group decided to brave the weather and do some skiing. Although it was cold, the snow was good, it was sunny and there were no lift lines! Some stayed and skied at Snowriver, while a few of us decided to head over to Big Powderhorn. Some of the non-skiers went to Big Powderhorn to hangout in the lodge and enjoy the sunshine and of course, some adult beverages!

Martin was also able to find an EV charging station at Powderhorn. He discovered that it was easier to find dispensaries, bars and pasty shops in the UP than EV charging stations. I guess they have their priorities there, weed, booze and food!

We enjoyed a buffet dinner on Saturday night in Dudley’s Saloon in the main lodge, followed by a spirited game of Bunco.

Betty, thanks for organizing our after dinner games, it was a lot of fun! Also thanks to Josh for bringing the shotski. It got used quite a bit over the weekend.

Sunday was a little bit warmer and fortunately we had good weather for our drive home. Everyone made it home safely. We all survived the weekend and had fun as we are a resilient group!
